Why did the Tokugawa Shoguns need to control society?
The Shogunates supervise private estates, put provinces under military control, bought justice and security and legal and financial government policies. Previous to this, imperial period, the emperor lost control of his government officials. These officials became managers of the different provinces, they sold crops, and taxes and some became very powerful. Then this became civil war.
The Tokugawa Shoguns had to control the daimyo because if they didn't then the daimyo could just take all the power of Japan. The only way they could to this was if there wasn't a social class system. The Shoguns controlled the daimyo by reducing the size of their territories, prohibited the daimyo from making alliances with one another, defeat daimyo in battle and forced some to pledge loyalty to the Shoguns. The effects that the Shoguns had on society was enormous. Even though the emperor was higher in the feudal system, the Shoguns had way more power. The Shoguns were able to control the size of the land of all the other classes and could use them as slaves. The Shoguns have impacted on society in Japan today because if the Shoguns weren't a part of the social system then there wouldn't be a Japan government today.
